Grant will help city target childhood obesity
Armed with a new $360,000 grant, Milwaukee is taking aim at its high rate of childhood obesity among the poor.
The four-year grant will be used to test and seed new policies at eight community agencies in the central city, everything from replacing sugary drinks and unhealthy foods in vending machines to assessing the physical activity of children who visit the agencies.

Zilber initiative shows signs of life around Milwaukee
When four football teams of 9- to 11-year-olds from the north and south sides of Milwaukee climbed aboard buses and headed for legendary Lambeau Field this month accompanied by cheerleaders, coaches and proud parents, they created a new spirit of excitement in their neighborhoods.
While the teams are but a small part of the 10-year, $50 million Zilber Neighborhood initiative, organizers see them as an important and tangible step in the effort to bolster poor neighborhoods in the city by creating new connections, new energy and new opportunities for its residents.

MILWAUKEE ARTISTS AND EDUCATORS
In recognition of National Arts Education Month in March, the Helen Bader Foundation is marking the first year of its Arts in Education Initiative, a three-year, $1.3 million partnership with key nonprofit agencies to bring the arts into the lives of Milwaukee’s underserved children. Under the Initiative, a new website—www.MilwaukeeArtsEducationDirectory.org—is being launched to serve as the region’s first online resource that connects educators and arts organizations.

Former Harley Official Named Director at United Neighborhood Centers
The United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM) has a new, full time executive director.
Tony Shields, who has been manager of community relations at Harley-Davidson Inc., has been hired to lead UNCOM, a collaborative partnership of eight neighborhood community nonprofits that includes Journey House, Milwaukee Christian Center and the Next Door Foundation.
As the new director of UNCOM, Shields will also help direct the Zilber Neighborhood Initiative, a 10-year, $50 million effort to try to revitalize the city's poor neighborhood.

City Options for Jobless Teens
American teenagers are mired among the jobless workers seeking opportunities in the global recession. Nationwide, the employment rate for 16- to 19-year-olds has never been lower in 60 years of monitoring by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Statistically, teenage joblessness has always run at a higher rate than the overall unemployment rate. The latest numbers, though, are jaw-dropping when measured against the rate at the beginning of this decade.

Zilber Names Organizations to Spearhead Neighborhood Projects
It was a block party celebration with young cheerleaders and a drum corps playing Friday as philanthropist Joseph Zilber handed out the first $5 million in grants to five nonprofit organizations, part of his $50 million initiative to improve poor neighborhoods in Milwaukee.
The first two community organizations that will lead the Zilber Neighborhood Initiative were also named at the celebration, held at N. 17th St. and W. North Ave.
The Walnut Way Conservation Corp. will lead the effort in the north side Lindsay Heights neighborhood, where Zilber grew up. On the south side, Journey House will coordinate the initiative.

Zilber Announces Neighborhood Initiative
Last Friday, Milwaukee philanthropist Joseph Zilber donated $50 million to local Milwaukee neighborhoods, part of an effort to improve the city he grew up in.
Zilber, 90, was born, and raised in the north side of Lindsay Heights Neighborhood, where his parents owned a grocery store. During his childhood he was taught the value of hard work. This lesson continues to resonate with him today as it is an important part of the Zilber Neighborhood Initiative.

Milwaukee's $50 Million Makeover: Susan Lloyd Leads Joe Zilber's Mission
By choosing Susan Lloyd to lead his $50 million initiative to “rebuild” Milwaukee, Joseph Zilber is tapping into her wealth of experience in neighborhood revitalization work in Chicago.
Lloyd, who will be the gatekeeper of Zilber’s plan to help low-income neighborhoods in Milwaukee, has an impressive resume. From 1993 to 2007, she worked for the Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, first as a consultant and then for about 12 years as an employee.
